« Bears Wed, 11/30 practice blog. Martz gone? Cutler out? | Main | Bears-Chiefs, Battle of Wounded Knee »

Bears Thurs blog. Nabbing McNabb? And Tyler what's-his-name

Lovie Smith appeared to get a little annoyed with me when I asked about Donovan McNabb’s release from the Vikings.

“He’s a fine player.  But beyond that I would never speculate.  I don’t know much else about it other than what you’re telling me.”

Nobody bothered asking if he’d fit into the Bears future plans because we all knew Smith wouldn’t answer it anyway.  It would only upset him more.

I would be shocked if the Bears claimed McNabb and even more shocked if he got past other teams like Miami or even the Colts.  The Bears like guys who know Mike Martz’ system and McNabb doesn’t.  While Martz likes mobile quarterbacks I just don’t see it.

As ticked as he appeared to be the Bears are still smarting over their loss to the Raiders and that could spell bad news for the Chief’s 27th ranked offense.  Many of my colleagues think Kyle Orton will start but the Bears clearly don’t.  The thinking is Tyler somebody will.

“Planko?  Palko? What’s his name?”  Izzy Idonije asked me when I asked if he knew his name. “He’s athletic.  An athletic guy.”

“As far as I’m concerned we’re going to see Tyler Palko,” Lance Briggs said, and then added, “It is Tyler right?”

So while they don’t know his name, they were respectful.

“They’re a physical team.  We’re going to be tested,” added Julius Peppers.

And the difference between Palko and Orton?

“One’s a lefty.  One’s a righty,” said Briggs.  “We got the lefty.”

Meanwhile Devin Hester missed part of practice for a “personal matter” Lovie Smith told me smiling when I asked if Devin was in court today.  But returned and had a “wonderful practice.”

D.J. Moore is still on the mend and the Bears are hopeful he can return to the lineup Sunday.  Let’s hope so but the Bears may want to hold him off one more week with Corey Graham playing well right now.

For the Bears to win Sunday they will need to pound the rock.  In all of the Bears 7 wins they’ve handed the ball off 27 times or more.  Conversely in their four losses they’ve run it less.  The Chiefs are vulnerable against the run too (ranked 26th last time I checked).

What will be interesting to see is who gets the most carries.  Forte and Barber have been doing more of a time-share lately with Barber having the higher YPC Avg in Oakland.
