On The Road to a Virtual Voyage!

I figured a  “Throwback Thursday” would be a most appropriate time to wax nostalgic and invite you to join me on my next virtual vacation!  This weekend I will set off on a wondrous adventure “across the pond”  touring southern England!  As if that weren’t fabulous enough, I’m traveling with my daughter Sara, just the two of us, as her graduation gift before she heads off to college next month!

During my 25+ years at ABC7, many of you have watched Sara grow up over the years - here’s the nostalgic part - and during that time she has become an incredible traveler!

She took her first cruise before she was 2 - at 4, she was climbing pyramids in Mexico!

At 6, Sara accompanied me and my Mom on a trip to Spain - 3 generations in our mother country! At 10, Sara was sightseeing through ancient Greece; at 12 she experienced the glaciers of Alaska!

I took her to President Obama’s first inauguration - we explored the holy land together with members of our congregation.

I chaperoned a high school choir trip to Ireland, and back in the states we took road trips to our national parks and the entire stretch of Rt. 66!  Sara’s 18th birthday with a destination party to the “Happiest Place on Earth!”

I now invite you to join us on our next adventure, as I share our discoveries in London and many other historic places in the UK.  We arrive at Heathrow Airport Monday August 4th; posts on Facebook and Twitter soon to follow!  As this is an “interactive vacation,” feel free to make suggestions, ask questions or give advice - this is the first time in the UK for both of us!

One more thing - a heartfelt thanks to my incredibly understanding husband for giving Sara and I this special bonding time while he stays at home.  Besides, someone has to watch the dogs, right?!

Bon Voyage!

The Voice of the Consumer

The 2009 Chicago Auto Show opened Friday morning at 10:00 am, and I must admit, I was a little surprised to see a rather healthy crowd.  With car sales at or near a record low for so many car manufacturers, why would all these people come to a show geared toward making a sale?  I have a couple of theories.  For one, the auto industry knows it has to reinvent itself as far as public perception.   The president and CEO of Hyundai Motor America, John Krafcik told me in an interview earlier this week that most people would rather go to the dentist than to a car dealership!  Think back to your last experience negotiating to buy a car.  Enough said!  Krafcik also said this is the car industry's own fault and it needs to turn things around.  Ah, we have now entered the age of accountability.  Don't get me wrong - I believe this is a good thing, as the "blame game" is getting awfully tired to me.  An older-but-wiser attitude just makes me a little skeptical.

That being said, I see how that attitude has made its way to the Auto Show.  After having a chance to preview some 1-million square feet of displays, I understand why people want to attend.  The show is fun!  Nearly every exhibit has something interactive, whether it's taking a picture with the Chevy Transformer prototype, or checking out the Apache Helicopter simulator at the Army display (which BTW I was terrible at!).

I will be back at the Auto Show on Monday and I would like to be your voice.  What are your concerns regarding the purchase of a new car?  What would you tell the car manufacturers if you could?  What questions do you about car safety and technology?  One thing that is consistent from show to show is the input consumers have regarding the concept cars that may go into production.  The auto industry listens to your suggestions.  Let me know what it would take to get you, the consumer, back in the car buying market and I will report back on ABC-7 News Monday afternoon.

Let's Take a Virtual Vacation

Admit it, I can't be the only one who has cabin fever, and really feels the need to get the heck out of Dodge!  The problem is, we can't just drop everything and head to a warmer climate.  There are work and family responsibilities - oh, yeah, and that other minor detail of how to pay for a vacation during a recession!  So here's what I'm thinking...one of my favorite ways to brighten up the gloomy days of winter is to take pictures or things that remind me of spring or summer.  How, you may ask, do you do that in the middle of February?  Well, when I was in D.C. last month, a trip to the Botanic Garden not only warmed us up physically, but the beautiful orchids took me thousands of miles away, to thoughts of a tropical vacation.

Then I thought of floral pictures I'd taken on previous vacations, like these wildflowers in Danali State Park Alaska.

Or this picture of a rose from my garden!

Ok, you caught me...I took that picture in '07 during the "year of the Cicadas!"  See the little red eyes peeking out on the left side of the flower?!

Anyway, my point is, we can take a "virtual vacation" to a warm and sunny climate and elevate our mood just by thinking and visualizing these summer thoughts!  I would love for you to share your favorite summer memories and photos with me.  We can all live vicariously through each other!
