On The Road to Holiday Travel

Here's the good news - holiday travel is up.  In Illinois, nearly 2-million people will be traveling over the Labor Day weekend according to AAA, an increase of 11.3% over 2009. OB Ike at Austin4-26-10 002

Here's the bad news - holiday travel is up!  If you're heading out of town, you will be joined by nearly 2-million of your BFFs!  Since the majority of those traveling will be driving, I thought I'd give you some travel strategies to make the trip a little less stressful.

First and foremost - BE PATIENT!  I have trouble with this one myself - just ask my husband!  Try to avoid driving during peak times.  If that's not an option, bring with some good music, snacks and a sense of humor!

Check the traffic on your route before you go.The best website I can give you to do this is IDOT's new and improved GCM Travel Corridor.  www.travelmidwest.com is an amazing resource, not just for holiday travel, but for day to day commuting.  It gives you congestion information, travel times, incident reports, construction details and real-time camera shots of the interstates, not just in the Chicago area, but also in Rockford, the Quad Cities, Northwest Indiana, Milwaukee, Madison and Southwest Michigan!  If you have a smart phone, bookmark this - you'll be glad you did!

Speaking of smart phones, an app I've found to be helpful is Google Maps.  It also gives real time traffic information, but I like it because it includes congestion info on roads other than the expressways.

Don't drive distracted! It seems like common sense to me, but I'll say it anyway...if you're using your phone to gather traffic information, DON'T DO IT WHILE YOU'RE DRIVING!  Check it before you leave, or pull over to the side of the road.  I'm done preaching.

Don't let your dog be a distraction!  Being a dog-owner, I'm compelled to share this with you!  A recent AAA survey found that 59% of drivers have practiced at least one distracting behavior while driving with their dog!  Most of them (55%) have pet their dog while driving (guilty), 21% let the dog sit in their lap (mine won't fit) and 7% admit to feeding their dog or giving it water while they drive (how is that even possible?!)

As they have in the past, IDOT, the Illinois Tollways, INDOT and the Indiana Tollroad will be suspending any additional construction closures until the end of the long holiday weekend.  So enjoy yourselves, relax, and don't forget to buckle up!

Hi- I was on the outbound Stevenson at 8:15 am this morning. Inbound was PACKED. I noticed at 1st ave a caravan of police cars from different towns, a touring bus and more police officers. Were these troops going to Midway possibly? If yes, we should have all stopped and started blowing our horns.
